Football Colts: "Sharrard-Smith and Saville were recognised as the regular wing-halves, though both are somewhat slow in recovery, they kick strongly, and are persistent tacklers. Both have the necessary stamina for half-backs, but they might, with advantage, make better use of the ball when passing to the forwards".
H.M.S. Avenger was a convoy support carrier ("Woolworths Carriers"). After taking part in Operation Torch landings of North Africa in November 1942, she departed Gibraltar with convoy MFK 1 on 14th November leading home to the Clyde. At 1305 on 15th November, Avenger was torpedoed by U-155 captained by Adolf Cornelius Piening. Avenger was hit on the port side amidships, which in turn ignited her bomb room, blowing out the centre section of the ship. Her bow and stern sections rose in the air and sunk within 2 minutes of leaving, only 12 survivors.
